Irvine, Calif. (July 16, 2015)—National Weather Service (NWS) officials recently recognized Concordia University Irvine (CUI) as a StormReady university. A nationwide preparedness program of the NWS and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, StormReady is a grassroots approach preparing communities for natural hazards. CUI becomes the 165th StormReady university in the United States, the 10th in California, and only the second StormReady university in Orange County to earn the distinction.

National Weather Service Warning Coordination Meteorologist Alex Tardy of the San Diego National Weather Service forecast office presented CUI officials with StormReady signage on July 8, 2015. “In the face of increasing vulnerability to extreme weather, Concordia University Irvine has taken the right steps to protect their students, faculty, and staff, and the surrounding community,” said Tardy.

Orange County is the first county in the United States to become both StormReady and TsunamiReady.

According to Concordia University Irvine’s Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Todd De Voe, Irvine and surrounding communities are prone to weather consequences. “After wildfires, for instance, certain areas can be prone to landslides and flooding issues,” shared De Voe. “Add to that Santa Ana wind storms, and there’s more to be concerned about. Our goal is to prevent the loss of life and property.”

To be recognized as a StormReady site—county, city, commercial or government site, Indian site, or university—a site must maintain a 24-hour warning point and emergency operations center; have more than one way to receive National Weather Service warnings to alert the public; monitor local weather conditions; and ensure hazardous weather and flooding are addressed in formal emergency management plans. Designation is valid for three years and can be renewed. University of California, Irvine is the first university in Orange County to become StormReady.
