CONCORDIA UNIVERSITY IRVINE EARNS NATIONAL DEBATE CHAMPIONSHIP

The NPDA Recognizes Concordia University Irvine as the Best College at the National Tournament

 

IRVINE, Calif. – March 18, 2015 – Concordia University Irvine today announced that its debate teams recently earned a top title at the National Parliamentary Debate Association’s (NPDA) Championship Tournament, earning a total of 64 points throughout the competition over the runner-up Washburn University’s 58 points. Other prominent schools in the top 10 included CSU Long Beach, Lewis & Clark College, the University of Nevada, the University of Oregon, the University of Utah and Whitman College. One-hundred and fifty-three teams from 50 colleges and universities across the country gathered at Kansas City Kansas Community College on March 15-17, 2015.

                “Over the past three years, Concordia teams have finished no lower than second place at the national tournament. This stretch of excellence is the direct results of an amazing group of students who worked incredibly hard,” said Konrad Hack, Director of Forensics. “With the strength of our hard-working students and the support of our coaches, we believe we can keep competing for and winning national titles.”

Seven of Concordia’s teams competed at the national tournament. Six of those teams earning a winning record after eight preliminary rounds to advance to the triple octofinal round with two of those teams reaching  the quarterfinal round. The NPDA recognized Concordia as the best college at the national tournament. Additionally, Concordia was runner up for the best regular season record, falling to Washburn University 129 points to 127.

Concordia’s debate teams were led by coaches Joe Allen, David Saulet and Director of Debate Kevin Calderwood. Seniors Richard Ewell and Amanda Ozaki were the only undefeated team in preliminary round competition and the first seed in the 153 team tournament. Other competitors for Concordia’s debate team include Manoah Marton, Brandon Winchel, Josh Vannoy, Jonathan Veal, Keith Corley, Patrick Ortiz, Peter Doesberg, Dan Welchons, Luke Marvin, Cameron Winchel, Judith Teruya and James Virant.
