IRVINE, Calif. – September 2, 2014 – Concordia University Irvine's School of Business today announced that Jen Shirkani, learning and development specialist and author of Ego vs. EQ – How Top Leaders Beat 8 Ego Traps with Emotional Intelligence, will be the featured speaker for the next event in the Business Insights Series. Perfect for business owners, executives and other aspiring leaders, the event includes breakfast and an optional book signing. The event will be held on Thursday, September 18 at Concordia University Irvine campus in the Grimm Hall Conference Center.

“Jen brings more than 20 years of experience as a learning and development specialist and coach, and she will provide valuable insight into how employers and leaders can raise their emotional intelligence to avoid career derailment,” said Dean Stephen Christensen, School of Business for CUI. “She takes the science of emotional intelligence and presents it from a leadership perspective filled with practical strategies and immediately useable tips.”

Shirkani has been featured in Businessweek/Bloomberg, Fast Company, Investors Daily and Upstart Business Journal. Her book, “Ego vs. EQ” was nominated for a 2014 USA Best Book Award and will be sold at the event. In her presentation, Shirkani will engage attendees in stories about the successes and failures of leaders of various industries through personal experience, research and case study examples. Her goal is to educate others about the preventative measures and consequences of failed leadership.

“It is alarming that two in five CEOs fail during their first 18 months on the job. I am determined to help others combat this executive leadership failure rate,” said Shirkani. “People can learn to be efficient leaders and use emotional intelligence to their advantage.”

The cost to attend this event is $25 per person and $15 for Alumni or MBA students which includes breakfast. Group packages are also available. The social media hashtag for the event is #CUIbis.
